About The Sterling Inn
A Historic Stagecoach Stop Since 1816
Our Story
Built in 1816 along what is now the Old Canada Road National Scenic Byway, The Sterling Inn began as a stagecoach stop serving travelers journeying between Quebec and the Maine coast. In those early days, the building housed the area’s first bar, dance hall, and post office—a true community gathering place in the remote Upper Kennebec Valley.
For more than two centuries, this historic property has welcomed weary travelers seeking rest, warmth, and a good meal. The faces have changed—from stagecoach passengers and logging families to Appalachian Trail hikers and snowmobilers—but the spirit of hospitality remains the same.
Today, The Sterling Inn continues that tradition under new ownership, offering 15 comfortable guest rooms, a well-stocked country store, and the kind of genuine welcome that only comes from innkeepers who truly love what they do.

Meet Your Innkeepers

Bill & Sue Dunigan
We’re Bill and Sue Dunigan, and we’re thrilled to be the newest stewards of The Sterling Inn’s 200+ year legacy of hospitality.
Our journey here wasn’t accidental. For 19 years, we managed residential programs with the Salvation Army, including 15 years at the historic Jubilee House in Dorchester, Massachusetts—a 6,000 square-foot Victorian with 23 rooms that served as both a residence and community hub. We learned that hospitality isn’t just about clean rooms and good breakfasts (though those matter!). It’s about creating a space where people feel genuinely welcomed and cared for.
When we discovered The Sterling Inn, we knew we’d found our next calling. A historic property with deep roots, serving travelers on meaningful journeys? It felt like everything we’d been preparing for.
Bill’s Appalachian Trail Connection
There’s a reason AT hikers feel at home here: Bill is a thru-hiker himself. He’s walked every mile of the 2,190-mile trail, from Georgia to Maine. He knows what it feels like to arrive at a hostel exhausted, hungry, and in desperate need of a shower and laundry.
That firsthand experience shapes everything about how we serve hikers—from the items we stock in our country store to the free shuttle service we provide. When you stay with us, you’re not just getting a room. You’re getting an innkeeper who truly understands what you need.
Sue’s Gift for Hospitality
Sue brings decades of experience creating welcoming spaces and memorable events. As creator of Operation Cinderella and co-director of the Salvation Army Servant Corps, she’s coordinated complex logistics for everything from community programs to weddings—always with warmth and attention to detail.
Whether you’re celebrating a special occasion or simply need a peaceful retreat, Sue’s touch ensures your stay feels personal and thoughtfully prepared.
What We Believe
History Matters
We’re caretakers of a 200-year legacy. Every creaky floorboard and historic detail tells a story, and we’re committed to preserving that character while providing modern comfort.
Every Guest Has a Story
Whether you’re 2,000 miles into a life-changing hike, celebrating a milestone, or simply escaping the everyday—your journey matters to us. We’re here to support it.
Hospitality is Personal
We’re not a faceless hotel chain. When you call, you’ll talk to us. When you arrive, we’ll greet you. When you need something, we’ll make it happen. That’s the inn experience.
